How to stand out with a cover letter

A lot has been said on the cover letter. But, as practice shows, Ukrainians either do not use this useful tool at all, or do it to their own detriment. To understand how to direct the power of the cover letter, Work.ua contacted Dmitry Tolmachev, Director General of the international recruiting company WORLD STAFF.

Dmitry’s answers to frequently asked questions regarding the cover letter will help you put a comma in the phrase “Cover letter: help can not be hurt” in the right place.
Why do employers ask for a cover letter

Cases in which, in addition to the resume itself, the employer asks to send a cover letter, is dictated by his desire to discern among the stream of incoming CVs of candidates with high motivation for the offered job, who are able to “sell" their candidacy. In addition, it does not hurt to evaluate the following qualities of candidates:

    business correspondence skills, ability to express thoughts briefly and to the point, ability to introspection;
    level of language proficiency (especially in cases where the resume itself and the cover letter need to be written in a foreign language);
    ability to creatively present information.

Is there a perfect cover letter and what does it look like

According to Dmitry Tolmachev, there is no such form of letter that would correspond to all companies at all times. However, there are several important rules that should be considered by those who decide to present themselves in the best light:

1. First of all, the cover letter must be individual. It is very helpful to ask a specific person if you know his name. Often on job sites it is indicated on whose behalf the vacancy is posted. You can also try to call the company and find out in advance who is running this vacancy, and possibly, preliminary, discuss the vacancy requirements with this employee in order to make your letter even more targeted.

2. The introduction must be convincing: you need to choose the “magical” word order that will make the recipient read your letter to the end and, most importantly, will encourage the decision maker to meet with you. By and large, the purpose of the cover letter is to ask for a personal meeting where you will be able to introduce yourself to the future employer in all its glory.

3. The letter should be concise, concise and structural. Information must be submitted in blocks, separating it with paragraphs, otherwise the text will merge into something whole, which is rather difficult for perceiving and remembering key information.

“It is boring to read very large texts of letters. In such cases, you read, as a rule, the beginning, one or two paragraphs, and then patience comes to an end, and the recruiter simply opens the candidate’s resume to quickly determine whether it’s worth spending more time on this candidate, ”Dmitry Tolmachev shares his experience.

4. If you are responding to a specific vacancy, then in the letter you need to emphasize your competitive advantages as a candidate for the mentioned position:

    If you have a deeper knowledge of the subject than indicated in the requirements, - underline this, if you have a longer experience - specify.
    If you do not meet 100% any particular requirement, but you have other competitive advantages, then it makes sense to emphasize such advantages and encourage the person in charge to meet with you in person.
    If in the job description it was a question of any specific skills that the applicant is required to have, indicate them and give specific examples where these skills were successfully applied by you.
    Indicate your 1-2 achievements in past workplaces - what allowed your past employer to significantly earn or save with your help. After all, it can come in handy in a new place!

5. Look at the letter through the eyes of the employer. If we are talking about vacancies where you do not need a lot of experience, but you need a capable and motivated person, demonstrate these your qualities:

    refer to examples where your abilities helped you achieve better results;
    mention specific information that you gathered about the employer from open sources (company website, media);
    make a statement that you wanted to work in this particular company, in this team of professionals or under the guidance of an authoritative leader.

6. Summarizing, indicate your willingness to meet in person at a convenient time for the employer, and that you are looking forward to feedback on your letter. Alternatively, you can stipulate in the letter that you will call back after one or two days to receive feedback.

Strong and weak words of your resume

The art of using strong words and avoiding weak ones is just one of dozens of aspects of writing an effective resume. The competent structure of the resume, its adaptation to a specific vacancy, the optimal saturation of the resume with keywords, the correct formatting of the text, the readability, and much more are also important.

The strong and weak words in the resume are a good judge of the director of the interregional recruiting company NAVIGATOR Sergey Belyaev, whose research is published by Work.ua.
Strong words

Use these words with caution, without going too far. And do not exaggerate your achievements. Remember that you may be asked to comment on each phrase, provide factual evidence and also verify this data in past jobs. Remember, the quality of using strong words is more important than their quantity.

As a rule, strong words are verbs. And not just verbs, but perfect actions. Use them in the description of your qualifications, work experience and, first of all, in the section “Achievements / results” (this is the most important section of your resume):

    created;
    achieved (such a result);
    developed (concept);
    implemented (for example, a program);
    initiated;
    organized;
    fulfilled;
    trained (for example, 12 managers);
    headed (department);
    managed (group);
    introduced / launched (in action);
    built (system):
    supervised;
    adapted;
    increased / increased (profit);
    improved;
    solved (problem);
    conducted an analysis.

Weak words

On the other hand, there are quite a few words that are either completely superfluous in the text, either require concretization, or simply fill a sore mouth, because they are used in almost every resume and do not carry useful information. Avoid such words and phrases, use synonyms if you cannot refuse them, or specify their meaning with any examples or facts:

    Creative
    organized;
    sociable (in 90% of the resume!);
    team player;
    extensive experience;
    motivated;
    responsible;
    analytical thinking;
    effective;
    carried out activities ... (oh, horror!);
    assistance;
    contributed;
    successful;
    took part;
    engaged in;
    ensured compliance.

Work.ua does not insist that the use of the “right” words is a panacea for writing a resume. But everything is important in the search for work, and especially such accents as the “necessary” words in the resume - Work.ua is sure. We wish you a successful selection of words!

5 exercises to help you find your destination

Exercise 1. Return children's interest

Do you know how a genius differs from an ordinary person? A genius asserts his right to do what he loves. This usually happens at a very young age.

Answer the question of what you loved doing in childhood. Even before your parents began to cram into you the setting that “drawing on bread does not work” or “dancing is not serious.” Write three things that really fascinated you as a child. This is a little clue where you want to go.
Exercise 2. Looking for patterns: 20 favorite activities

Now let's make a list of 20 of your favorite activities. Let some of them seem banal to you (for example, eat delicious food) - write anyway. When the list is ready, look carefully at these activities. See the patterns? Could it be that things related to helping people prevail on your list? Or some sports? Or affairs connected with quiet monotonous work?

Consider what groups this list can be divided into. It will help you understand what kind of life you would like to live.
Exercise 3. Your Perfect Environment

If no one believes in you, then it becomes even more difficult to believe in yourself. That is why the environment that generates winners almost always consists of winners. Unfortunately, the environment in which we are accustomed to growing does not favor the creation of geniuses.

Imagine that the world has changed overnight according to your needs. And the next morning it will be filled with people like you want. What will these people be like? What qualities do they have? Maybe all of them are creative, or, conversely, these are people who have passed a compromise of five plus? Maybe they do everything quickly, or, on the contrary, would you like to slow down the world?

What did you learn about yourself and what do you need to fully prove yourself?

Exercise 4. Five Lives

Now imagine: you will have five lives. And in each of them you can become what you want. How do you live these five lives?

This exercise, like everyone else, you can customize for yourself. If you manage for three lives - take three. It takes ten - do not deny yourself anything.

So, imagine that you will devote one life to biology, the second - to professional travel, the third - to have a large family with a bunch of children, in the fourth you will become a sculptor, and in the fifth - an astronaut. Which one do you like more?

The most important thing here is to understand the following: if you need to choose only one life, even the one you like best, you will still miss the rest. Because they are your integral part. They rumbled into our heads: “Decide!” This is sad.

In the world there are people born for a single purpose, but this is a rare exception. Each of your lives contains something that you really love and need. And you can bring it into your life.
Exercise 5. My Perfect Day

Now we have a long walk according to your imagination. Take a pen and a piece, and drive. So how do you see your perfect day?

Live this day in the present tense and in every detail: where do you wake up, what kind of house is it, what do you eat for breakfast, what clothes do you wear, what do you do, what kind of work do you do, at home or in the office?

Do not limit your imagination. Describe the day that you would live, if you had absolute freedom, unlimited funds and all the strengths and skills that you only dreamed about.

After the list is compiled, divide all your fantasies into three groups:

    What of this do you need as air.
    Which is optional, but I would very much like to have it anyway.
    What you can do without.

Our life consists of life experience, stories, roles, relationships, earnings, skills. Some of this we ourselves choose. Some of what we call our choice is actually a compromise. Something generally a coincidence. Some of this is necessary and very expensive. But all this is not you. Focus on yourself. And these exercises will help you determine your calling.

6 Ways to Work Better in Less Time

1. Be yourself!

According to socionics (the concept of personality types) people can be divided into rationals and irrationals. Rationals are lovers of plans and deadlines, they are punctual and love order. Irrationals are spontaneous and very mood-dependent. The type you belong to directly determines how you work best.

If you are rational, then planning will help you: every evening spend about 5 minutes writing a to-do list the next day. The list is best written on paper. At the same time, each business can be assigned its own degree of importance in order to start work tomorrow with the most urgent and important tasks.

If you are irrational, then trying to strictly follow a previously developed plan can discourage you from all your desire to work. So try to get started with what you have the mood for. Do not force yourself to do the same thing for a long time, the best rest for you will be to switch from one task to another. But do not allow yourself to relax excessively and give up work halfway. Clearly understand your priorities and complete the work you have begun. In this case, excellent results will not be long in coming, because the irrationals are very able-bodied, the main thing is to find an approach.
2. Control and control again

Whether you are a punctual rational or spontaneous irrational, self-control must not be forgotten. It is not difficult to close all entertainment resources and social networks in the browser before starting work, it is difficult not to open them back an hour later. Permanent mail checking, non-work communication, blogs and forums - all this can be done at home.

Communication on work issues can also be reduced, especially if after a few minutes it turns into a normal friendly conversation.
3. A few words about the rest

Rest is an indispensable condition for effective work. The main thing is to ensure that pauses in the work schedule are not delayed. Optimal - take small breaks every 40-60 minutes. During such breaks, you can walk, look out the window, in a word - relax.

At the same time, do not get carried away with invigorating drinks - making coffee will take extra time, and a large amount of it can negatively affect your health.
4. Take care of the workplace

You probably think that we will talk about the order on the desktop, but this is not so. Order is an individual matter, and it should be recognized that many of us are much more pleasant to work in an atmosphere of light creative disorder.

It's about air. Your office should be well ventilated. Thanks to fresh air, the brain's performance will increase, and then a headache is unlikely to catch you by surprise.
5. Adequately evaluate your strength

Do not take on more work than you can do. Tasks need to be distributed evenly, otherwise overwork and excess stress can seriously damage your well-being.
6. Listen to yourself

And finally, I want to note that universal advice on how to work more efficiently does not exist. In order to achieve your goal you will have to work hard on yourself. Listen to yourself and you will definitely come to a comfortable mode of operation.

Sergey Marchenko's Hardcore Tips: A Cover Letter That Will Work

“How important it is to stand out when looking for work! Imagine this is a vacancy. The vacancy is excellent: the salary is high, the work is interesting, the office is good, the center, the classy office ... and the crowds, crowds, crowds of applicants !!! At least 2-4 thousand people usually apply for a really good vacancy. This is not a competition for you at the university - 3 people per place. Yes, two-thirds are outright spam: people without qualifications who are eliminated by assistants according to formal signs and do not even catch the eye of a recruiter. But all the same, several hundred people remain who can really claim this position.

Chances are few? And there is always little chance of an excellent job! This poor and low paying job is always full. In order to get a good job, a cover letter will help.

A well-written cover letter smears honey with the sensitive souls of eychars, wounded by already eliminated candidates, and eager to find you - good, experienced, skillful, reliable. But, a good three-quarters of the cover letters do not smear anything, but, on the contrary, tear apart spiritual wounds.

For example, the accompanying text cannot be treated anonymously. If you have written some general text, it is better to immediately throw it away along with job opportunities. Eychar opens it up and says: “Yeah, he will be happy to join our team ... just as with those fifty other teams where he sent his resume! Cynical brehl !!! ". Also, no one cares that with the help of this work you will grow careerly, that you have long wanted to change your work to office work and that you live nearby. What do I care about your career and your amenities dude ?? !!

Or else beautiful: “I have a weak resume, but in general I am a great one !!! Take me! ”True, it sounds like Panikovsky’s monologue ?! Remember, "I'm old ... women don't like me ..."? In general, everything personal and everything that you plan to get from this work interests only one person in the world: you yourself! And (bad news), you are not the kind of person who decides to hire. Therefore, this information is useless.

Useful information is diametrically opposite. The fact that you (remember, one of the hundreds of applicants?) Can give companies such that others cannot. These may be your unique skills: printing at a speed of 600 characters per minute, a customer base in half of Ukraine, a team ready to come with you, your unique development, which allows you to reduce costs by 30% and put on a competitor, etc. No personal throwing and moaning, tormenting your subtle soul, only hardcore - the facts !!!

Although not, there is another way to dilute the facts with your personal. Tell us in a letter HOW you will work, WHAT you are willing to sacrifice for the sake of working in such a company, where you ALREADY worked in a busy mode and how EXCELLENT you coped with the tasks. Only when you think about what a specific (I insist, SPECIFIC!) Employer needs from you and write to him as soon as possible, clearly and reasonably, your chances of getting a good job will begin to grow. And (good news!) One more thing. Almost no one writes about this.

Good luck Stand out! ”
